Kennel Volunteers - Various

The kennel extension build is starting early January 2025. This may well add additional stress to the animals we have in kennels so we are looking for a variety of extra help.  We hope to have everything in place by early February, please be patient while we contact you.  Thank you

Dog Walkers

  • Objective: Get all dogs off premises for long walks
  • Commitment required:
    • Minimum of 1 hour, up to 3 hours (if the dog is willing)
    • Once a week
    • Between 10:30am and 3:30pm one fixed day from Monday to Sunday
  • Note: This role is not for the faint-hearted. It is a very hard role and physically and mentally demanding.
  • Restrictions:
    • Dogs may pull and be very strong.
    • May not people-friendly, not dog-friendly, or friendly towards other animals.
    • May bark and behave in a way that requires a strong handler.
    • Restrictions:
    • Dogs cannot be let off lead during walks.
    • Each dog ideally has its own handler for consistency, but this may change due to rehoming.
    • All handlers must be over 21 and no children allowed
    • The top priority is to keep the dogs safe when they are out.
  • Adaptability: Essential to adapt to changes in the needs of the dogs.
  • Weather: Walks occur in all but the most inclement weather (only three cancellations in the last 18 years).
  • Walking Arrangement: Dogs are walked one-on-one.
  • No other dogs are allowed during walks.
  • 100% of your attention must be given to the dog.
  • Role will be unsupervised any handler must always act in the best interests of our dogs to keep them safe. Body cams will need to be worn. The top priority is to keep the dogs safe when they are out.

Cat Companions

  • Objective: Companionship for cats
  • Commitment required:
    • Once a week
    • 2 hours per session
    • Between 1:15 PM and 3:30 PM, Monday to Friday
  • Activities include:
    • Grooming
    • Interaction
    • Playing
    • Talking to cats
    • Sleeping on you
    • Just being present
  • Cats have varied needs; some may prefer no interaction but to just have you with them
  • Time needed for cats to adjust to new people
  • No seating available in the cattery; sitting on the floor is an option
  • Not all interactions are cute; cats have teeth and claws
  • Role is unsupervised; ability to organise own time during session essential to ensure all cats get equal treatment

Rabbit/Guinea Pig companions

  • Objective: companionship for Rabbits/Guineas pigs and occasional other small mammals
  • Commitment Required
    • Minimum 1 hour per session
    • Between 1:00 PM and 3:30 PM - Monday to Friday
  • Activities to include:
    • Grooming both rabbits and guinea pigs
    • Playing with toys or engaging in interactive games
    • Allowing time for just sitting together to build comfort
  • Ensure ample space for both animals to move around freely
  • To interact correctly crawling round on the floor will be needed
  • Be patient and attentive to the needs and comfort levels of each animal
  • Monitor interactions closely to ensure safety and positive experiences
  • Must be over 21 years old, no children allowed
  • Role is unsupervised; ability to organise own time during session to ensure all little ones get equal treatment

  • Objective: Raise funds and awareness of BARK and its objectives
  • Organising events

  • Crafting and making things to donate

  • Theatrical side
  • Love for bingo
  • Great quiz master
  • We actively encourage participation from the younger members of our community but are unable to offer direct supervision.

To apply for one of our volunteer opportunities please go to this volunteer application form and complete the form. We will be in contact with you as soon as a volunteer opportunity arises. For fundraising opportunities applications must be made from someone over the age of 21, please detail ages of younger members of our community wishing to help with fundraising in the comment section.
